Opiskelijalle

The Language Centre arranges language and communication skills training for university staff in conjunction with Staff Training services.  Our courses offer support for multicultural work environments, and assist with developing skills for teaching through a foreign language as well as enhancing confidence in supervisory communication.  Please confirm with your supervisor your interest in participating in staff training before registering for course offerings.

University staff are also welcome to participate in any Language Centre course offerings from the basic level right through post-graduate studies if there is room in a course.  If you find training of interest, you can contact the course instructor for further information before registering.

XHNK000 TACE - Teaching Academic Content through English

Englanninkielistä opetusta antavan opetushenkilöstön täydennyskoulutusohjelman tavoitteena on kehittää kielellisiä, viestinnällisiä ja pedagogisia valmiuksia käyttää englantia omalla alallaan erityyppisissä ja erimediaisissa opetus-, oppimis- ja ohjaustilanteissa. Suomi toisena kielenä/Finnish as a second language

XHNK016 Basic Finnish course for staff members (24 h)

Level: no previous knowledge of Finnish

The course is intended for the University’s international staff who have no prior knowledge of Finnish. The aim of the course is to learn the basics of the Finnish language and culture and to promote integration into the Finnish working environment. During the course we will practise both receptive and productive language skills, focusing on those needed in the academic working environment. In addition, strategic skills for language learning will be practised in order to make the most of the Finnish-speaking environment for language learning and to promote skills for independent language learning.

This course will be offered in the autumn and spring terms, starting 7.9.2017 and 23.1.2017.  Further information and registration in Korppi.

XHNK048 Small talkista keskusteluun / From Finnish small talk to conversation (8 h)

Small talkia työkavereiden kanssa / Workplace small talk in Finnish

Taso: A1

Kurssi on tarkoitettu yliopiston kansainväliselle henkilökunnalle, jolla on takanaan vain vähän suomen kielen opintoja (esim. Basic Finnish). Kurssin tavoitteena on tutustua muutamaan akateemisessa työelämässä tyypilliseen informaaliin viestintätilanteeseen, kuten lyhyet rutiinimaiset työtoverin kanssa käytävät small talk -tilanteet/keskustelut. Osallistujat voivat itse valita harjoiteltavia vuorovaikutustilanteita. Kurssin harjoitusmuotoina ovat puhe- ja kuullunymmärtämisharjoitukset sekä mahdolliset videoinnit.

Level: A1

The course is intended for the University’s international staff who have studied only a little Finnish (e.g. the Basic Finnish course). The objective of the course is to practise a few informal communication situations typical of the academic working world, such as short, routine small talk situations and conversations among co-workers. The participants can choose the interaction situations they wish to practise. The modes of study include conversation and listening comprehension exercises as well as potential video recordings of in-class simulations.

XHNK049 Asiantuntijaviestintä / Expert Communication (8 h)

Taso: A1

Kurssi on tarkoitettu yliopiston kansainväliselle henkilökunnalle, jolla on takanaan vain vähän suomen kielen opintoja. Kurssin tavoitteena on löytää strategioita ja välineitä selviytyä tavanomaisissa omiin työtehtäviin liittyvissä viestintätilanteissa. Kurssilla kartoitetaan välttämättömimpiä tilanteita, joissa osallistujat tarvitsevat suomen kieltä. Tilanteita analysoidaan yhdessä ja lisäksi pohditaan keinoja toimia niissä. Kurssin työskentely tapahtuu osittain osallistujien omissa työyhteisöissä.

The course is intended for the University’s international staff who have studied only a little Finnish. The aim is to find strategies and tools for handling ordinary communication situations related to your work. The course covers the most essential situations where you need Finnish. The situations and ways to handle them are analysed together. Part of the course work is carried out in the participants’ own units.

This course will be offered in the autumn and spring term, starting 24.10.2017 and 12.3.2018. Further information and registration in Korppi.

XHNK060 Konsultaatiota suomen itseopiskeluun / Finnish self-study consultation (2 h)

Taso: sopii kaikille

Moduuli on tarkoitettu yliopiston kansainväliselle henkilökunnalle, joka haluaa kehittää itseopiskelutaitojaan. Moduulissa pohditaan ohjatusti omia suomen oppimisen tavoitteita ja kartoitetaan henkilökohtaisia kielenoppimisen polkuja, kuten tulevia kursseja ja itseopiskelumahdollisuuksia. Moduuliin voi osallistua useita kertoja.

The module is intended for the University’s international staff members who want to develop their self-study skills. The module provides the opportunity to discuss your own goals in learning Finnish and to map your individual language learning paths, such as future courses and self-study options. You can participate in the module more than once.

Kampusenglantia/Working on Campus in English

XHNK038 Working on Campus in English: Activate your English (12 t)

Onko englannin opinnoistasi jo hetki aikaa? Onko englanninkielen taitosi päässyt ruostumaan? Haluaisitko kerrata englannin perusteita? Tällä kurssilla voit kehittää valmiuksiasi ja saada rohkeutta käyttää englantia työssäsi ja arkipäivän tilanteissa.

Kurssi on tarkoitettu henkilöille, jotka hallitsevat englannin perusteet, mutta haluavat lisää rohkeutta käyttää englantia osana työtään.  Kurssilla tehdään paljon erilaisia käytännön harjoituksia. Kurssilla opit esimerkiksi:

  • käyttämään työelämän sanastoa ja sanontoja
  • neuvomaan ja opastamaan englanniksi
  • kertomaan yliopistosta työ- ja opiskeluympäristönä
  • viestimään selkeästi ja tehokkaasti sähköpostitse ja puhelimitse

XHNK039 Working on Campus in English: Develop your English (12 h)

Are you occasionally required to use English in your work? Do you feel that you lack the competence or the confidence to use English? This course provides you with tools to use English more fluently and effectively. Furthermore it gives a confidence boost to put your skills into use.

This course is targeted for staff members with intermediate English competence who wish to develop their skills further. The course consists of a variety of activities that aim at developing for example the following skills:

  • Explaining and clarifying issues related to the university as an organization.
  • Giving instructions and guidance to fellow staff members as well as students.
  • Mastering the art of small talk.

XHNK065 Working on Campus in English: Focus on your Grammar (12 h)

Would you like to revisit the basics of English grammar and gain new insights to it? Do you wish to gain more fluency to your English writing? Would you like to learn new strategies for improving your writing in English in relation to your daily tasks at work? This course provides you guidance for overcoming those tricky situations with English grammar and gives you tips for writing more effectively, fluently and politely in English. Moreover, the course will help you in terms of coping with the writing process as a whole, as well as boost your confidence to seize the work assignments, which require the use of written English.

XHNK040 Working on Campus in English: Fine-tune your English (12 h)

Do you need to use English on a daily basis in your work? Are you able to cope with English but still wish to polish your skills? Are you required to give professional presentations or deliver informal or formal speeches in English? Is hosting foreign guests part of your job? Do you wish to become more fluent and above all more comfortable in terms of using English?

This course is targeted for staff members with good command of English and who wish to fine-tune their skills. The course consists of a variety of activities and the main focus is on developing oral skills. By the end of the course you will know how to:

  • prepare and give different types of professional oral presentations
  • deliver formal and informal speeches
  • communicate in formal and academic situations in English.

The language of instruction is English. The course will be offered in the autumn term of 2017 starting 27.10.2017. More information and registration in Korppi.

XHNK062 Working on Campus in English: Engage in Discussion (12 h)

Do you wish to gain more confidence and overall fluency to engaging in discussion in English? Do you sometimes feel reluctant to actively participate in discussions due to a fear of “not finding the right words” or not understanding your counterpart’s message? Are you at times puzzled by the different tones and nuances in discussion if the language is English? Are you often thinking about the possible differences of formal and informal language when talking in English?

This course is targeted for staff members with a relatively good command of English and who wish to become more confident and active participants in formal as well as informal discussions in English. The main purpose of the course is to provide its’ participants chances to engage in discussions of a variety of topics. Each session will have its own theme and the themes will vary from formal academic topics to everyday life issues depending on the participants’ interests.

XHNK015 Focus on Pronunciation: Communicating more clearly in English (8 h)

(Language of Instruction: English)

This short module for university staff and researchers will cover key sounds in English which are challenging for users of English as a foreign language. We will compare differences between the mother tongue and English, with the goal of increasing awareness of the contrasts. Practical application of contrasts will be conducted in the language studio with individual feedback. 8 contact teaching hours. The course will be offered once a year in the spring term.
